Hans-Jürgen Mühle celebrates his 80th birthday

Hans-Jürgen Mühle has worked in the Glashütte watch industry for over 50 years: from taking over his father’s business in 1970, through his time as GUB managing director, to re-establishing the company of his ancestors, he has seen and shaped the history of the place like no other. Today the founder of Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte is 80 years old.

An eventful life

Hans-Jürgen Mühle was born on September 22nd, 1941 in Schweidnitz. In his earliest childhood his mother fled with him in the freezing winter via Dresden to Glashütte. Here he completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic before he studied precision mechanics and optics in Leipzig and Jena after his time in the army. As a young man, he took over his father’s business “Ingenieur Hans Mühle” in Glashhütte, until it was expropriated in 1972. In the following years, Hans-Jürgen Mühle worked in sales at VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, later became sales manager and, after the German reunification, commercial director of GUB. In 1994 he re-founded the company of his ancestors: as Mühle-Glashütte GmbH nautical instruments and precision mechanics.

A successful life's work

Today Hans-Jürgen Mühle wants above all that the company he founded will continue to exist successfully as a family business. It has been in the best of hands with his son Thilo for many years. In addition, his son Thomas, his daughter-in-law Mandy and his son-in-law Uwe have been working in the company for a long time. As the sixth generation, his grandchildren Fanny and Dustin Mühle are now on board.

What precision can I expect from my Mühle wristwatch?

It is normal for mechanical watches to display a certain amount of tolerance because fluctuating temperatures, the tension of the winder springs or the position in which a watch is stored or worn can all affect its operation and accuracy. As we do not know how a watch will be worn, we always regulate our watches so that they are slightly fast, with a precision of between 0 and max. +8 seconds per day. Why? Because we want to ensure that Mühle watch wearers are never too late because of their time measuring instruments.

How often does my mechanical Mühle wristwatch need to be serviced?

Mechanical watches should be serviced from time to time. Over the years, the processes taking place inside the movement cause a certain amount of abrasion due to parts wearing. This abrasion contaminates the oil and sometimes forms deposits, which may cause the precision of the watch to deteriorate. We therefore recommend that our watches be fully serviced every four to five years. We advise wearers to get the watertightness of their watches checked every two years.
